About Your Organization/Department

I went to college and medical school at Michigan and did my residency there, so I was eager to leave, but I was dragged back in 1969, kicking and screaming after a 3-year hiatus
I turned down a lucrative private practice job to take an academic job that paid half as much. I am still trying to determine if I was a dummy for doing that.
I learned GI and liver pathology by looking through the microscope and talking to clinicians.
I have been extraordinarily lucky to have had some amazing mentors, including A. James French, my first chairman, Gus Abell, my first tutor in surgical pathology who made me study everything I looked at, Elson Helwig, a giant of a skin and GI pathologist who always asked why things happened whenever he looked at a case and Matt Alpern, a brilliant scientist who taught me to ask the questions other people wanted to ask but were afraid to do so because they worried they would be ridiculed.

I have been married to Harlene for 28 years, and have enjoyed every minute of those years. Some guys just get lucky.
We have 5 amazingly accomplished and even nice children and step-children
We have 4 obviously superior grandchildren, Lilli, Bran-Man, The Harp and the Big Ox, currently ages about 1-13 years.
I work out daily to keep up with them.
My most important achievement is sticking around, continuing to practice pathology in my subspecialty, teach anyone who is willing to listen and still enjoying these things as much as ever over 51 years after I started my residency in pathology
