Dr. Nelson received her A.B. degree from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, and her M.D. degree from, Autonomous University, Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. She took her specialty training in Pathology at Wadsworth Veterans Administration in Los Angeles, and at the University of California, Irvine. She began her career in the pathology of HIV infection and AIDS as a resident. After additional training in infectious disease pathology at the AFIP, she spent five years studying AIDS in Kinshasa, Zaire as part of a large international consortium (Projet SIDAÂ). Dr. Nelson has co-authored numerous articles and book chapters, co-edited two books, ande has given many courses, seminars and slide conferences on the pathology of AIDS and Emerging Infections. Dr. Nelson is Chief, AIDS Pathology and Emerging Infections, Branch, Department of Infectious and Parasitic Diseases Pathology, Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Washington, DC, and the Director, Distance Learning Subject Matter Coordination Center, AFIP.
